How to anti-strat your ESEA opponent
2026-10-30
You don't need an analyst to prepare for a league match. You need three or four of the opponent's recent demos and an hour. Here is what to look for, in order of how much it pays off.
1. Their maps
Which maps do they play, ban and avoid? A team's last ten matches usually tell you their first ban and their comfort pick. Plan your veto around it before you look at anything else.
2. Their pistol rounds, both sides
Pistol rounds are close to a coin flip, so any edge counts, and a team that has a pistol play it trusts tends to run it again. Note for each half:
- Which site they go (T) or how they stack (CT).
- Which grenades they throw and when.
- Who opens the round.
3. Their defaults
Watch where each player stands about 20 seconds into the round on both sides. A default that repeats tells you where the free information is, and where a lone player can be isolated.
4. Their executes and what they turn into
From the default, where do they go when they commit, and how fast? A team that hits the same site from the same default after a pick is a team you can stack against.
5. The players to watch
Find the player who gets their opening kills and the spot they get them from. One well-placed utility or an off-angle on that spot can change the match.
Turn it into a plan
End with three lines your team can remember: the veto, one pistol-round read per side, and one setup to punish. More than that won't survive the first round.
RetakeHQ's Opponent page builds this from the demos you have: likely maps, players to watch, their setups and plays.
