How to review a CS2 demo as a team (in 20 minutes)
2026-10-30
Most teams review a loss by watching the whole demo, getting bored around round 9 and remembering nothing. A review only works if it ends with one or two things you'll do differently next match. Here is a routine that gets there in about 20 minutes.
1. Start from the rounds you lost, not round 1
Write down every lost round and sort them into three groups:
- Gun rounds you should have won: full buy against full buy, or a man advantage you didn't convert.
- Economy rounds: ecos and forces you were always likely to lose. Skip most of these.
- Pistol rounds: watch both. They're close to a coin flip, so every detail you learn matters.
The first group is where the review is.
2. For each gun round, find the moment it turned
Don't watch the round from the start. Find the kill or the decision after which the round was gone, and watch the 10 seconds before it. Ask:
- What was the player's job? Anchor, entry, lurk, support, AWP.
- Did they leave it? An anchor pushing out of site, a lurker taking a fight before the hit.
- What did it give away? A site with nobody on it, a man advantage, the clock.
That's the sentence you say to the team: "You're B anchor; you pushed lower and died alone at 1:10, so they knew B was open. Next time hold lower until they make a move, or peek it with a teammate."
3. Look for the same mistake twice
One bad round is noise. The same mistake in three rounds (or three matches) is a habit, and habits are what you fix. If you have older demos on the same map, check whether it happened there too.
4. End with one change per player, at most
Pick the one or two lessons that cost the most rounds and turn each into something to try next match. Write it down where everyone sees it before the next game.
Doing this faster
RetakeHQ does steps 1 and 2 for you: upload the demo and Coach Review opens on how you lost rounds. Each one has the kill that cost the most, a one-line lesson in the shape above (the player's job, the moment they left it, what to do next round) and a button to watch it in 2D from just before it turned. The three lessons that cost the most rounds sit at the top as things to work on.
